An exciting community ensemble of dedicated musicians, bringing music to the Waterloo Region!
  • Wellington Wind Symphony members: Due to the winter storm in tomorrow’s forecast, the board has decided to cancel tomorrow night’s rehearsal (Jan. 25th). Stay warm, stay safe, and ‘Maslanka’ on! See you all next week!
  • We are excited to welcome our special guests, ‘The Spitfire Brass Quintet’ to our next concert on March 1st! The Spitfire Brass Quintet is composed of members of the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces, one of Canada’s six full-time, professional military bands. • Symphony No. 4 is by far the most popular of David Maslanka’s large-scale pieces. He writes: “It is a single 27- minute movement comprising a series of connected episodes. It divides roughly into two halves, the first seemingly the energy and turmoil of a life, punctuated by powerful revelations of spirit, and the second the journey toward God. A core element of the Symphony is the many references to the hymn, “Old Hundred” (the Doxology). I came across this melody in reading Carl Sandburg’s “Abraham Lincoln: The War Years” about Lincoln’s funeral train, how it stopped in Columbus, Ohio, where, following public display of the coffin in the State House, it was carried out to the waiting train while a brass band played “Old Hundred.” I began playing with the tune, creating a large number of variations and feelings, from interior to jazzy to explosively breath-taking. The extended ending is one of the grand moments in my music, and I think why people are so attracted to this piece.”

If this description sounds meaningful to you, just imagine hearing the piece! Come to our performance of the riveting Symphony No. 4 and hear the splendor for yourselves!

  • “You cannot hate while making music”

“Music creates peace.”

“My music has always surprised me. It seems to come out of someplace deeper than my conscious mind, and to give me powerful musical feelings that I could not consciously think up.”

These are just some of David Maslanka’s thoughts that help illustrate the depth and emotion behind his music. Come hear and “feel” the power of his musical voice as we perform Maslanka’s ‘Symphony No. 4.’
